August F. Hadorn

August Floyd Hadorn, a good man, has made his way back home. He was born in 1918 in Miegs County, Tennessee, of immigrant parents, orphaned at age eleven, yet rose to become a pillar of his community. August graduated from Powell High School, serving as captain of the football team, and with the aid of a scholarship, graduated from the University of Tennessee with degrees in Agriculture and Education. Before pursuing professional dreams of farming and teaching in which he would leave an outstanding legacy, he joined ranks with other Americans to fight fascism. Immediately prior to being commissioned as a lieutenant in the Navy, August married Ina Myers of Greenville, Tennessee. He served proudly in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Upon returning home he began raising a family building a farm and teaching in the Sweetwater valley. He and Ina raised three sons: Gus, Ross, and Chris. His farm was known for outstanding hogs and cattle. After the death of Ina, he married Venoy Hamilton and embraced new children and grandchildren. He farmed until his death at 85. He also retired as Principal of Brown Elementary after 32 years of service as an educator. He was generous with his time and resources. He served the Sweetwater First United Methodist Church faithfully in many capacities through out his life. August was director of his watershed and recognized as Lion of the Decade by the Sweetwater Lions Club. He managed the Monroe County Fair in its days of prominence. He was very involved with the work of Habitat for Humanity. August balanced his life with Tennessee football and square dancing with the Little T dancers. His family, neighbors and friends mess him dearly and cherish his legacy. August is survived by his wife Venoy and sons Gus and Chris, daughters-in-law, Susan and Coye Baker, daughters Mary Ann Moore and husband Edward Moore, Kay Marlar and husband Tim Marlar, granddaughters, Gabrielle and Rose Hadorn, Jennifer and Pam Marlar, Alison Moore and numerous Nieces and Nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday May 15 at the Sweetwater First United Methodist Church the family will receive friends from 2:00P.M. until 3:00P.M. with service to follow at 3:00P.M. with Rev. Julian Walton officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church at 501 Church St. Sweetwater, TN 37874.
