Betty Jo Salmons Shelton

Betty Jo Salmons Shelton, 91, of Harriman, TN, and lately of Lexington, KY, passed away at Mayfair Manor Nursing Home in Lexington early in the morning, Thursday, February 27, 2025. Betty was born in Corbin, KY, on October 16, 1933. Some time later, the family moved to Oakdale, TN, where she graduated from Oakdale High School in 1953. Betty married and moved to the Dayton, OH, area where she raised her two sons, Dennis and Michael. She worked for a time for a major national publication and was a longtime employee of the Hallmark store in Huber Heights. In 1993, she moved to St. Louis, MO, to live with her son Dennis and help raise her granddaughter Michelle. Betty returned to Tennessee in 2005 to be near family and lived in Harriman for the next 14 years. Her next move was in 2019 to Lexington where her younger sister lives. When independent living became a challenge, she transitioned to Mayfair Manor at the age of 87, where she was loved by all, staff and residents alike, for her humor, generosity, playfulness, and love of life. She had a deep faith and abiding trust in Christ, loved God’s Word, understood the power of prayer, and believed in the ministry and comfort of angels. The family acknowledges and is so grateful to the staff at Mayfair Manor for their exceptional care, compassion, and service. Betty is survived by her granddaughter Michelle Shelton (fiancé Christian) and great-granddaughter Avaya; her younger sister Lillian Salmons Clark; and, numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her two sons Dennis and Michael Shelton, who were the love of her life and gone too soon; her parents Margaret and Fred Salmons; six siblings, including three brothers, Fred Jr., Charles, and Ernest Salmons, and three sisters, Gladys and Evelyn Salmons, and Loraine Salmons Hacker; and, Charlie Shelton, former spouse and father of sons Dennis and Michael. Milward Funeral Home in Lexington provided cremation services. Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman is handling further arrangements. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 12 noon on Saturday, April 12, at Kyker Funeral Home in Harriman, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 p.m., Pastor Tommy Kilby officiating. Burial will be in the Harriman Cemetery. Kyker Funeral Home of Harriman is serving the Shelton Family.
