His life was defined by unwavering dedication, loyalty, hard work, humor, and love. He possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome, valued, and encouraged—whether on the football sideline, at the dinner table, on the golf course, or while sharing one of his classic Tennessee jokes. Kippy radiated warmth, energy, and a personality that left a lasting impression. He drew people in naturally, not by demanding attention, but because others wanted to be near him. Football Career Kippy’s football career was nothing short of extraordinary. Over decades in the game, he earned the respect of players, coaches, colleagues, and fans worldwide. He served as a coach, teacher, mentor, and leader, shaping the lives and careers of countless athletes. For Kippy, football meant more than plays, formation, wins, or losses; it was a platform to teach discipline, responsibility, perseverance, teamwork, and character. Before gaining recognition as a coach, Kippy made history as a player at Sweetwater High School and later became the first Black quarterback at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). This achievement required courage, determination, and a willingness to break barriers during a time when opportunities for Black athletes were limited. Kippy opened doors for future generations, not only through his talent but through his strength, dignity, and perseverance. His legacy in Memphis football is significant, and his impact extends far beyond the games he played. He inspired future generations to see themselves in positions of leadership and opportunity. Throughout his collegiate and professional coaching career, Kippy guided generations of players—not only teaching them how to play football, but also how to work hard, believe in themselves, handle adversity, and become better men. His investment in his players went far beyond their performance on the field; he cared deeply about who they were and who they could become. Many of his players became lifelong friends, a testament to the relationships he fostered with them and their families. His home was always open, whether for an ugly Christmas sweater party, sharing a glass of wine, watching classic TV shows like The Rifleman and Andy Griffith, or simply telling stories. Everyone knew they were welcome. Kippy worked alongside and learned from some of the finest coaches and football minds in the country. He was renowned for his knowledge of the game, his teaching skills, attention to detail, and his gift for connecting with players. He could recognize talent, develop potential, and unite people. The lessons he taught continued to influence his players long after their playing days ended. Kippy reached the highest levels of professional football, experiencing the pride and excitement of winning a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, a milestone many consider the pinnacle of a football career. Yet those closest to him understood that even a Super Bowl victory was not his greatest achievement. Family: His Greatest Victory Kippy’s greatest victories lay outside the football field; they were found in his family. He was deeply in love with his wife, Deon, his partner of 52 years. Their relationship formed the foundation of his life and brought him his greatest joy. Deon was his partner, confidante, home, and heart. Through every season of his football career, long hours, demands, and changes, Deon stood beside him. He adored her and loved her unconditionally; everyone who saw them together could see it. While he was “Coach” to the world, to Deon he was her husband, whom she relied on, laughed and danced with, and shared his life with. Their love was built over decades through memories, challenges, celebrations, and ordinary moments made extraordinary by their togetherness. Kippy was a proud father to Jerome and Jennifer. He loved watching them grow, find their own paths, and become the people they were meant to be. He always offered advice, encouragement, stories, jokes, or unsolicited opinions—in his most “colorful manner,” even before anyone asked. His children knew they were loved and supported. Through his example, he taught them to show up, work hard, keep their word, care about others, and never lose their sense of humor. He celebrated their successes, supported them in difficult times, and was a steady presence they could always count on. Then came his grandchildren—Jaxon, Jordan, and Juliana. They lovingly called him Kippy. He loved watching them grow, hearing about their lives, spending time with them, and making them laugh. He was proud of each of them and delighted by their personalities, accomplishments, and adventures. He gave them love, attention, wisdom, and just enough teasing to keep them humble. Their love of golf began at a young age, as Jerome introduced the boys to the game when they could barely walk. He enjoyed competing with the boys and reminding them that “money out of sight cause fights.” He understood that being a grandfather was more than spoiling his grandchildren. It was about being present, sharing stories, creating memories and giving them a sense of their roots. He wanted them to know and be proud: YOU ARE A BROWN Friendships and Community Kippy cherished his friends. He collected people, not things, building lasting relationships wherever he went—through football, family, golf, travel, work, and the many chapters of his life. Some knew him as Coach Brown, others as Kippy, Dad, teammate, neighbor, or golfing partner. Regardless of how they knew him, they knew they mattered to him and “would kick their butts in any card game and especially Bid-Wiz. Kippy had a gift for making people feel like old friends. He could converse with anyone, tell stories that improved with every retelling, and make people laugh unexpectedly. He remembered people, encouraged them, and always made room for them in his life. His friendships were built on loyalty and laughter. He was the sort of friend who would offer advice, share a meal, tell you exactly what you were doing wrong—and then help you fix it. While he could be competitive, especially when scores were involved, his greatest joy came from spending time with the people he loved. Golf: Passion and Connection Golf was another passion for Kippy and Deon. He loved playing, watching, talking about, analyzing, and explaining the game. He enjoyed the challenge, competition, quiet stretches, beautiful courses, and most of all, time spent with friends. Golf gave him another avenue to connect with people, tell stories, laugh, compete, and savor life. Of course, Kippy saw golf as a game of explanations: when a shot went well, it was skill; if not, there was always a reason—the wind, uneven grass, an uncooperative club, or a defective ball, and if those didn’t suffice, perhaps the course was just designed incorrectly. However, he had two hole-in-ones. He could discuss a golf shot long after others forgot it, making each round a story, lesson, and comedy routine. Beneath the jokes and competition was something simple: Kippy loved being outdoors, surrounded by people he cared about, enjoying the game and the life it represented. Legacy and Remembrance Football was Kippy’s profession, but family and friendship were his life. His career gave him a platform, but his character shaped him. He earned respect through football achievements, but his kindness, humor, loyalty, and love earned him lasting affection. Kippy leaves behind a remarkable football legacy, remembered by players who learned from him, coaches who worked beside him, colleagues who respected him, and teams that benefited from his leadership. His influence lives on in the lessons he taught and the people he encouraged. Yet, his most important legacy is personal: it lives in Deon, the love of his life; his children, Jerome and Jennifer; his daughter-in-law, Jessica; his grandchildren, Jaxon, Jordan, and Juliana. It lives in every person made stronger, happier, or more hopeful because Kippy cared. Kippy will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, his children, his grandchildren, his siblings and other family members, players, coaches, colleagues, and many friends whose lives he touched. There will be moments when his absence feels especially heavy—during family gatherings, on the golf course, while watching football, when a familiar story is told, or when a joke is made that Kippy would have enjoyed. There will be times when people instinctively look for him, expecting to hear his voice, laugh, or opinion. And then there will be the memories. The stories will continue. The lessons will remain. The laughter will return. His family and friends will carry forward the things he taught—not only about football, but about loyalty, perseverance, love, friendship, and the importance of enjoying every moment. Kippy understood that life is short: take the trip, buy the shoes, eat the cake, don’t cheat yourself. Enjoy the people you love. Play the round. Tell the story. Laugh until your sides hurt. Make memories. In the end, it’s not the things we accumulate that matter most, but the moments we share, the people we love, and the memories we leave behind. Farewell Kippy was a coach who helped others win, but the truth is, Kippy Brown won the game of life. He found the love of his life, raised a family he was proud of, adored his grandchildren, loved his siblings and family members and built lifelong friendships. He created a lasting football legacy, gave generously of his time and wisdom, made people laugh, showed up for those he loved, and left the world better for having been part of it. So, Dad, Kippy, Coach, husband, and friend—take your final swing. We hope the fairways are green, the weather beautiful, the greens true, and every putt goes in. May there be no wind, no bad lies, no slow group ahead, and no questionable call from the scorekeeper. And knowing you, Kippy, there’s already a foursome waiting, introductions made, swings assessed, pointers offered, and explanations shared about how you used to be much better than all of them. Maybe you’re telling them about your best round, maybe making a bet, and maybe, just maybe, every shot is going exactly where you intended. We love you. We will miss you. And we will carry you with us, always. Until we see you again, Coach. Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our Kippy. The family and friends will meet at 8:45 A.M.
