Ella Melvin Winsbro

Ella Melvin Winsbro,– age 79, of Kingston, Tennessee, died on January 15, 2006. Born on July 8, 1926, in Kentenia, KY, she was a secretary at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant in 1945, where she met her husband Robert. They spent their early years in Oak Ridge, moving in 1951 to their lakeside home outside Kingston, where they have resided since. Ever young at heart, Ella was a wonderful mother to her children, enjoying games, circuses, and ice skating extravaganzas as much as they. As her children matured, she found an outlet for her love of crafts, nature, and youth as a Girl Scout leader and as a counselor at Camp Ozone, a Presbyterian Church Camp on the Cumberland Plateau near Westel, TN. Ella was preceded in death by her parents, Graham and Gertrude Melvin, and her brothers Edward Melvin and Bob Melvin. She is survived by her husband, Robert Berkeley Winsbro, whose love for Ella has endured and doubled through 60 years of marriage, strengthened by their mutual commitment to her survival through recurring illness. She is survived by one son, Ken Winsbro, and daughter-in-law Maggie Winsbro; and by three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Winsbro Church and Johnny Church, Bonnie Winsbro and Vic Cain, and Linda Winsbro-Fernald and Greg Fernald; eight grandchildren, Dan, Julian, Wayne, Mike, Jessica, Geoff, Avery, and Berkeley; and eight great-grandchildren, Dustin, Nikki, Cory, Shelby, Chloe, Jeremy, Justin, and Percy. The family would like to express their unending gratitude to Ella and Robert’s neighbors, who have provided practical aide, emotional sustenance, and loving friendship throughout the 13 years of Ella’s off-and-on illness. They represent “community” in the true sense of the word. We thank Dr. Bruce Avery for giving Ella those 13 years, and Margaret and the other nurses in Dr. Avery’s practice for their consistently loving and compassionate care. Funeral 11am Thursday January 19, 2006 at the Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Marc Sherrod officiating. Burial in Roane Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, Ella requested that donations be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church of Kingston 203 S. Kentucky St. Kingston, TN. 37763. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8pm Wednesday at the Kyker Funeral Home in Kingston.
