Hubert Clinton Martin

Hubert "Wormy" Clinton Martin, of Sweetwater, Tennessee, died peacefully in Parkwest Hospital on January 5 in Knoxville, Tennessee at the age of 85. Hubert is survived by his devoted wife, Rella Mae Ross Martin; his daughter, Wanda Hicks and son-in-law, Junior Hicks; his son, Dwayne Martin and daughter-in-law, Debbie Martin; his grandchildren, Kristi (Jessie) Harrison, Travis (Holly) Hicks, Mary Elisabeth Higgins, Jonathan (Kendra) Martin, Sarah Martin; his great-grandchildren, Maryica Upton, Drew Hicks, Grace Collier, Joshua Collier, Eloise Martin, Felix Martin, Leilani Bryn Higgins, and Levi Higgins; his brother, William Martin; and his sister, Rena Kate Hooper. He is preceded in death by his son, Glenn Martin; his father, Chantler Martin; his mother, Beulah Rodgers Martin; his brothers, Clarence Martin, Robert Martin, Wayne Martin, and Daril Martin; and his sister, Mildred Hawk. Hubert Martin was born on August 4, 1931, at his family's home in Madisonville, Tennessee, to Chantler Martin and Beulah Rodgers Martin. He married Rella Mae Ross on December 23, 1950. Soon afterward, the newlyweds moved to Sweetwater and Hubert began working for Sweetwater Utilities as a lineman. After 43 years working for the same company, Hubert retired as foreman at age 62. Over the 66 years of marriage, the couple welcomed three children into their home and they set about raising them in a God-centered home. His children remember their dad as a kind, but firm, father who encouraged them to pursue happiness that only comes from a relationship with God, the father, and Jesus, His son. Hubert Martin was accomplished at checkers and often participated in checker tournaments. He was a generous and witty individual who loved his church and who was passionate about fishing. He was an active and dedicated member and deacon of the Glenlock Baptist Church and acted as a Sweetwater Volunteer Fireman in his earlier years. The receiving of friends and family is scheduled for 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 14, at Glenlock Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The funeral will begin at 12:00 noon with a reception at the church to follow the graveside ceremony. Reverends Gerald Atkins and Clayton Dunsmore will officiate the ceremony.
