Jewel Faye Vann Sledge

Jewel Faye Sledge, age 72, of Sweetwater, TN our beloved wife, mom, sister, “Mamaw”, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 13th, 2023. Born in Oliver Springs on August 2nd, 1951, she was the eldest of nine children of Freddie and Ethel Vann. In 1972, she married the love of her life, James Albert Sledge. They moved to Sweetwater where they raised their three children: Jamie, Joy, and Jessica. She held a variety of jobs, but eventually became a cafeteria worker in the Sweetwater City School system. Not afraid of hard work or a challenge, she worked her way up the chain of leadership where she eventually became the head supervisor of the entire system of cafeterias within the district. Confirming her ability to lead, she even returned to college late in life and acquired an Associates Degree from Cleveland State Community College in 2011. As her children grew up and created families of their own, she ended up with five grandchildren and four great grandchildren (with another on the way). Growing up in a home with a father who spent many years preaching the word of God, Jewel was a strong believer in Jesus Christ. She and James attend Liberality Baptist Church pastored by their close friend Niles Dockery. Jewel is preceded in death by her parents, Freddie and Ethel Vann; and sister, Ella Mae Vann. Jewel is survived by her husband of 51 years: James Albert Sledge, her three children and their spouses: Jamie (Ann) Sledge, Joy (Scotty) Hicks, and Jessica Sledge. Grandchildren, “Little” Jamie (Tosha), Cora (Dalton), Lincoln, Bella, and Weston; great grandchildren, Hayden, Caden, Joseph, River, and (soon to be born great-granddaughter Addison Jewel). Siblings: Deanna, Vicki, Ramona, Wanda, Nathan, Allen and Darrell. Jewel knew that God called all of us to a life of service. Thus, she spent a life serving everyone around her. She will be remembered for her hard work ethic, kindness, generosity, warm smile, and most of all, dedication to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing her. Receiving of friends will be held on Tuesday, December, 19th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and funeral service will follow with Rev. Niles Dockery officiating, at Sweetwater Memory Chapel, 1838 US-11, Sweetwater, TN 37874. Interment 11:00A.M. on Wednesday in the Rockville Cemetery, in Sweetwater.
