Letha Oggs

Letha Oggs, age 79, of Sweetwater, departed this life pm Sunday, July 3, 2016 at her home after a courage battle with Dementia. She was a member of North Point Cumberland Presbyterian Church of America where she served as an Elder and Presbyterian Synod Committee Person. She also served as treasurer for Hiwassee Presbyterian and a trustee on the First United Church of Christ Board. She attended High Point High School Class of ‘54, then Knoxville College where she majored in Biology and became a teacher. She was member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and a member of the Sweetwater City School Board, and she volunteered in summer feeding programs. From 1958 until 1964 she taught at High Point and coached the girl’s basketball team. After that she began a career at Union Carbide ORNL as a microbiologist specialist and program manager in Environmental Compliance. She is preceded in death by her parents: Roy and Eliza Wells Oggs; siblings: Thelma Olivia Scruggs, William Roy Oggs and Nelley Oggs Pettway; nephews: James H. Scruggs, William “Tony” Scruggs and Otis Anthony Scruggs. She was survived by sister: Alice Montgomery Sisson; nephews: James H. Oggs, Gary D. Pettway, William D. Gillespie, Otis Anthony Oggs, William Roy Oggs, Jr., Andrea Montgomery, Marsety Oggs, Kevin D. Pettway, Michael Montgomery, Vashon Oggs, Jason Oggs, Joseph Oggs, Marcus Montgomery; nieces: Catherine Hague, Mary Scruggs, Wanda P. Edmonds, Annett O. Smith, Eliza O. Thompson and Jacqueline M. Robinson; sister-in-law: Imogene Oggs Wilkerson; a host of other family and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 9, 2016, in the Sweetwater Broad Street School Auditorium, located at 301 Broad St. in Sweetwater, from 11:00A.M. until 1:00P.M. with the funeral service to follow at 1:00P.M. The interment will follow the service in the Sweetwater Memorial Park.
