Mamie Ester Upton

Mamie Ester Upton was born on October 15, 1911 in Sweetwater Tennessee. She was the only child of the late James Wilker and Lattie Hamilton Wilker. At an early age she was baptized and attended services in Sweetwater and faithfully served the lord for the duration of her years. In the late 1920's she met and married Edward Upton of Sweetwater. From this union one son was born, George Edward Upton. In the mid 1930's the Upton family relocated to Hempstead, Long Island, New York. In the mid 1940's Mamie relocated to Manhattan, New York and later resided in the Harlem area where she lived until 2011. While living in Manhattan, Mamie became a member of Southern Baptist Church, under the Pastoral care of Reverend Wilson and at her passing, Reverend Roberson was Pastor. Mamie was a loyal and devoted member, joining various choirs, serving on several boards and participating in other activities within the church. She was the Church mother until her health began to fail in the early 2000's. Mamie loved to travel and was often accompanied by her special friend from Southern Baptist, Ms. Bessie Denmark. The two were always on the go being privileged the opportunity to travel abroad as well as within the United States. Mamie was a member of Star of Hope Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Stars of Manhattan. She was also a member of The Monarch Elks Temple #815 in Manhattan, New York. Mamie is remembered for her many attributes that endeared her to her family and friends. She was a professional seamstress and loved to crochet and create one of- a- kind articles such as hats, scarves, doll clothes and Afghans, for her loved ones. Whether it was her fine sewing abilities, her love of plants, her passion for serving the Lord, or her light-up-the-world-smile, there was something about her personality that will keep her remembered as a good, decent woman who had always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Mamie passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at 11:46 am while residing under the watchful care of Highland Care Center in Jamaica, Queens. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, George E. Upton and his long-time companion, Ms. Ethel Davis. Mamie's husband, Edward, predeceased her on June 2, 1972. She is survived by one Godson, Mr. Kevin Lee and his wife Trudy; one Aunt Ms. Juanita Hamilton of Knoxville, Tennessee; three special individuals, Caroline Oates, Amanda Jenkins and Terrance Jones as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who love and miss her dearly. She will also be greatly missed by Mr. Rick Anthony, a very close friend of Southern Baptist Church. Mamie enjoyed life and anybody who knew her was immediately taken by her kind demeanor and exuberant smile. May she rest eternally in paradise. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Kyker Funeral Homes, Sweetwater, from 12:00 noon until 1:00P.M. with the service to follow at 1:00P.M. in Kyker's Chapel. Interment to follow in the Sweetwater Memorial Park. Kyker Funeral Homes, Sweetwater in charge of arrangements.
