Nellie Katherine Oggs Pettway

Mrs. Nellie(Nelleye) Katherine Oggs Pettway passed on 12-27-2009 at Parkwest Medical Center. Ms. Pettway resided in Sweetwater at Sweetwater Home for Seniors after moving from Eutaw, Alabama, in 2008. She was born in Sweetwater on 9-26-25 to the late Eliza Wells and Roy Oggs. She was a faithful member of Macedonia CME Church in Boligee, Alabama and attended North Point CP Church in Sweetwater. She was a graduate of Cook high in Athens, TN after early schooling in Sweetwater. She graduated in 1948 from Knoxville College with a B.S. degree. After college she taught school in Alabama at Greene county Training School (Paramount High) for 47 years. She coached girls track and basketball and won State Championships in each sport. While in high school she was a member of the first State Championship team ever for Monroe County, Tn. While teaching she also directed cheerleaders, majorettes, and her beloved regionally acclaimed dance group called Bobcat Kittens. She was a very active community leader and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. , with the status of Silver member. She also was a founder of Les Jolies Dames Social Club which was dedicated to civic and educational activity for Greene and surrounding counties. She loved sports, avid golfer, spades, dominoes, and scrabble player. She was preceded in death by husband, Patrick H. Pettway, siblings Olivia O. Edwards , and Williams R. Oggs. She leaves to mourn sons, Gary D. Pettway and Kevin D. Pettway, daughter and husband, Wanda Jo and Eddie Edmunds, grandchildren Staff Sergeant Elliott E. (Amy) Edmunds, Joel Edmunds, Jonathan Edmunds, Kristin Pettway, and Deon Pettway, sisters Letha Oggs and Alice B. Montgomery, foster children Marvin Childs, Iris Sermon, and Eddie M. Brown, sister-in-law Imogene Wilkerson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and one great-grandchild expected in April. Services will be conducted by Reverend Ernst May on Thursday ,31st, at Kyker Funeral Home in Sweetwater. Visitation will be from 11-1 with the funeral to follow, at 1:00P.M.. Interment to follow in the Sweetwater Memorial Park.
