Dr. Robert Springer Childs Sr.,

Dr. Robert (Bob) Springer Childs, Sr., surrounded by loving family, left his earthly home for his heavenly one on Friday, August 18, 2006. Although his body succumbed to cancer, he refused to let his will and determination do the same. Even to the end, he kept his sweet spirit and spiritual strength. Born on June 2, 1931, in Hohenlinden, Mississippi, he was the eldest son born to John Robert and Erie O’Fallon Childs. As a graduate of the UT School of Dentistry in Memphis, he practiced dentistry in Kingston, having moved there with his young family in the fall of 1956. During his long and honored career, he received the Second District Dental Association’s most prestigious award, “Dentist of the Year.” He often represented Roane County as a Second District Association councilman, and he held every office in the Roane County chapter of the group. He also served as vice-president of the Second District Association on two separate occasions, President of the East Tennessee Academy of Dental Practice, and several times as a delegate to the State Dental Association. He also maintained memberships with the American Dental Association, Tennessee State Dental Association, Second District Dental Society, Academy of General Dentistry, East Tennessee Academy of Dental Practice Administration and the Roane County Dental Society. A member of Lawnville Church of Christ, he was a strong supporter of the church. Even as his illness progressed, he continued to attend, being an inspiration to family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Robert Paul Webb. His legacy of survivors is a rich one---he and his wife, Martha Jenkins Childs, celebrated fifty-five years of marriage on May 20, 2006. He also leaves behind six children who know that Heaven has welcomed him in: Robert (Bob) Jr., and wife, Tonja of Kingston; Kathy Webb and husband, Phil of Gray, TN; Cindy Moseley and husband, Milton; Kim Richardson and husband, Ridge; Brian and wife, Chris, all of Kingston; and youngest son, Barry of Lake Lure, NC. His grandchildren are: Robert (Robbie) III, Brad, Ryan and Whitney Childs; Phillip and Annie Webb; Kathryn and James Moseley; Steffan and Aaron Richardson; Rachael and Brian Childs, and Jennifer and Barry Childs, Jr. Great-grandchildren are Autumn Childs, Joseph Moseley, Kayla Gilmore, with two additional ones due later in the fall. He has two younger brothers, Richard and wife, Eva; Brad and wife, June as well as a brother-in-law, Daniel Jenkins and wife, Elaine. He has two nieces and five nephews along with a multitude of great nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Sunday, August 20, 2006 at the Lawnville Road Church of Christ. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00am on Monday, August 21, 2006 by Minister Rob Sparks, Bro. Danny Nunn, and Bro. Gerald Stow at the Lawnville Road Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Kingston Memorial Gardens. Pallbearer serving will be grandchildren of the deceased: Robert Childs, III, Bradley Childs, Phillip Webb, Ryan Childs, Steffan Richardson, James Moseley, and Aaron Richardson. Honorary Pallbearers are Lloyd Smith, Wayne Woodlee, Marvin Smith, Dr. William Wimmer, Dr. William Piper, and Homer Hamby.
