Howard Mac Trapp

Lt. Col. Howard Mac Trapp, retired, age 94 years seven months of Kingston, Tennessee passed away at 2 am March 24, 2006 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on March 14, 2006. Lt. Col. Trapp was born in Wildcat Hollow near Smithville in DeKalb County, Tennessee. He graduated from DeKalb County High School, Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, and the University of Tennessee Law School where he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree. He pursued several professional careers. During his military career, he served in the 6th U.S. Calvary Equestrian and Armored Divisions during World War II. He was a graduate of the First Advanced Motor Class U.S. Calvary at Fort Riley Kansas and involved with Research and Development while stationed in the states. Then he was in the Army of Occupation in Japan and the Philippines. Following World War II he remained active in the 278th Tennessee National Guard in many capacities including positions on the Tennessee National Guard General’s Staff. During the Korean Conflict he was the Executive Officer for the activated 278th Battalion Headquarters Unit and was stationed at Fort Devins, Mass., Pine Camp New York and Iceland where he was the Camp Commander. He taught school with Dekalb County and Roane County Tennessee Boards of Education. In Roane County he taught at Rockwood High School and Roane County High School before becoming principal of Midway High School. He later returned to Roane County High School before retiring. He was a member of the DeKalb County Bar Association and the Roane County Bar Association. In 1978 he served as Roane County Sessions Judge. He served on many Roane County Election Poll staffs; as a member of the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department for a several years after moving to Kingston in 1949; was the first Civil Defense Director for Kingston; and on the Kingston Planning Commission. For many years he was active in the Roane County Teachers Association and served as the association president; Roane Retired Teachers Association; Three-Rivers Camping Club, and other organizations. He was Past Master of Union Masonic Lodge #38 and Past Worthy Patron of the Kingston Order of Eastern Star. He was a 32nd degree York Rite Mason, He was a member of the Roane County Historical Commission and served as his family’s historian and genealogist having researched his family history for over 70 years. His ancestors were early settlers in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. He enjoyed sports and especially the Lady Vol’s. History, traveling, photography and caring for his yard and flowers were a few of his many interest. Always a proponent of physical fitness, he spent many hours on daily walks. He was a devout Christian. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years Lillian Leota Wilson Trapp; one daughter Oda Ann Trapp; two grandchildren Mayme and Oda Margrave; his parents James Fantly and Minnie Lou Walker Trapp; three sisters Etta Mae Hoover, Ila Carlene Denson, and Betty Jean Bailey; and two brothers James Fantly Trapp, Jr. and Jackson Walker Trapp. He is survived by four loving daughters, Leota Mac and Frank Bennett of Mount Carmel, Tennessee; Joy and Gary Margrave of Kingston, Tennessee; Ms. Rebecca Trapp of Baltimore, Maryland; Mona Lisa and William Botts of Little Mountain, South Carolina. Eleven grandchildren Miss Mary Bennett of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Amanda and Blair Lt. Col. Howard Trapp continued Anderson, Markham, Ontario Canada; Howard Bennett, Hermitage, Tennessee and his fiancée Miss Mary Grace Close; William and Angie Margrave of Gray, Tennessee; Andrew and Shanna Margrave of Murfreesboro Tennessee; Shoshana Manuel, Leah Goldman, Ezra Goldman, Jacob Goldman all of Baltimore, Maryland; Christine Botts and Brandon Botts of Little Mountain South Carolina; and five great-grandchildren Kathlene, Mackenzie, Alexandra, Jonathan, and Shaun. The family will receive friends Sunday, March 26, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Kyker Funeral Home Chapel, Kingston Tennessee. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with the Reverend Ted Clower officiating Masonic Services will be conducted by the Union Lodge #38 at 4:35 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Graveside services will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Poplar Springs Cemetery, Kingston, Tennessee with burial will follow at the ceremony. Military graveside services will be conducted by Roane County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Orange Grove Center, 615 Darby Street, Chattanooga, TN 37404
